I received this book as an ARC!

Genre: Dark Romantasy

Spice Level: 0

Rating: ★★★ (3/5)

Summary:

Minah, a wolf shifter without a Silencer (a magical barrier that tames the beast within), is an outcast in her own pack. Rydan, a disgraced Alpha turned rogue, has no intention of claiming a mate—until fate forces their paths to collide. But trust is hard to come by when instincts and old wounds clash.

Tropes & Archetypes:

  • Enemies to Lovers
  • Alpha Male
  • Rogue King / Exiled Alpha
  • Fated Mates
  • Defiant Mate
  • Dark Shifter Romance

World-Building:

The wolf pack dynamics and lore are the strongest parts of the novel. The prologue sets the tone well, and the internal politics of the packs are intriguing. I liked the idea of Silencers and how it affects social hierarchy.

Characters:

POV switches between Minah and Rydan, but unfortunately, neither character was fully fleshed out. Their emotional arcs were rushed, often contradictory, and lacked consistency. One moment they’re arguing, the next they’re affectionate—it felt jarring. Their romance didn’t build naturally, which made it hard to invest in.

What I Liked:

  • Unique Silencer concept
  • Solid foundation for pack hierarchy and lore
  • The prologue was promising

What I didn't Like:

  • Telling over showing throughout
  • Poor grammar and editing—distracting at times
  • Character motivations were muddled
  • Emotional beats and romantic progression didn’t feel earned

Cover Art:

3/5 stars. A decent fit for the genre but nothing groundbreaking. It signals "dark shifter romance" at a glance, but I was hoping for something more atmospheric or symbolic.

Would I Reread This Book?

No. I don’t plan to revisit it or read anything else by this author.

Would I Recommend It?

Honestly, no. Unless you’re a hardcore dark shifter romance fan who can overlook craft issues and is just here for tropes and vibes.

If you liked Crave by Tracy Wolff or Wolves of Winter’s Edge by T.S. Joyce, you might enjoy The Rogue King's Mate.
